Qatar’s DOHA (AP) — Louis van Gaal, the head coach of the Netherlands, was nicer to the World Cup host on Wednesday, but he still backed Dutch supporters who are boycotting Qatar. The seasoned coach was questioned about his well-known expletive-laced remark that it was “crazy” for FIFA to travel to the small emirate in the interest of improving the game at his first press conference since arriving in Qatar.
However, in my opinion, you need to play in football nations that have greater experience in all areas while also encouraging them to continue along the correct path, as Van Gaal mentioned on Wednesday. And right now, this is a little country as well. In the second of his three stints as manager, Van Gaal guided the Netherlands to the 2014 World Cup semifinals in Brazil. “My family and friends have a lot of difficulties finding a place (to stay),” he said.
Since FIFA authorities decided to award Qatar the right to host the World Cup 12 years ago, the country has engaged in an extensive building binge, and the treatment of low-wage migrant workers has drawn harsh criticism.
The majority of the European teams playing in Qatar endorse the “One Love” anti-discrimination programme, which is run by the Netherlands soccer association. Their captains have vowed to wear armbands bearing a heart-shaped, multicoloured emblem to call attention to Qatar’s law criminalising homosexuality and its treatment of LGBTQ individuals.
Van Gaal stated that he stood behind supporters who choose not to visit Qatar due to concerns about their rights.
“Because they are required to do so and because they believe in it. Therefore, there is no issue with it, stated the 71-year-old former coach of Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United.
